Rykka’s “Bad Boy” is heading to Newport Beach!

“Bad Boy”, a music video I directed in 2016 for Swiss-Canadian artist RYKKA, has been Officially Selected by the 18th Newport Beach Film Festival in California, April 20-27, 2017.

It’s a pretty rad festival as I found out last year when my short BEAT AROUND THE BUSH was officially selected. A shout out to programmer Bojana Sandic for inviting me to submit all of RYKKA’s videos, and also for programming one seriously hilarious short this year, HAND JOB, by Alex Heller. Check it out.

New music video “Runnin’ Away” for RYKKA

Above you’ll find the third music video collaboration with RYKKA for her track “Runnin’ Way” which we shot in Luzern and Zurich, Switzerland. This baby was also shot by Oliver McGarvey, my long time childhood chum, and the same DOP for Rykka’s “Movies” music video in the glacier.

Hit fullscreen and HD for all that black lamb goodness.

Want some literary material to back it up?

Jordan Miller from BreatheHeavy.com writes:

Got a case of the Mondays? Trying to make sense of President Trump’s anti-Muslim immigration ban? Still hungover from Saturday? Wouldn’t life be easier if we could leave all our troubles behind and run off into the sunset? Let’s take a cue from singer-songwriter Rykka, who evades everything dreary in the latest visual off her recently-released album Beatitudes. In the Brianne Nord-Stewart-directed clip, Rykka lost all fucks: she eats a bowl of cherries, pets a baby lamb, dances in an empty pool “Formation” style and cruises through the countryside in a vintage car. How’s your 2017 going?

Jenna Melanson from Canadianbeat.com quotes me:

We’ve done three music videos together. “Runnin’ Away” was filmed in Switzerland and it was a unique experience to spend time living on Rykka’s farm and travel down the hill to swim in the Zurich lake every day. For two weeks we shot the music videos and edited them. This opportunity of living together fostered a unique collaboration as artists. I don’t think I could repeat those circumstances with just anyone. Beyond talent, Rykka’s vision of who she is as an artist is clear and unfaltering.

Young & Reckless now streaming around the world!

L to R: Devon, Brianne, Andrea, Sierra (as OLIVIA)

L to R: Devon Ferguson (as DEVON/co-creator), , Brianne Nord-Stewart (director/producer, Andrea Shawcross (writer/co-creator), Sierra (as OLIVIA)

Back in April I was in production directing a hilarious and fresh presentation pilot written by one of my favourite collaborators, Andrea Shawcross. The project? YOUNG & RECKLESS. If that’s enough to hook you already, just head to www.YnRtheseries.com to get your binge on.

YOUNG & RECKLESS follows a 28 year old dude whose arch nemesis is a 13 year old girl.

(I would like to remind you to check your eyes so you realize this is not called “Young & Restless” like the daytime soap opera. We aren’t blasting our show with white diffusion and melodramtic scenes about nothing to culminate in a hundred some hours of a TV season where nothing happens but there’s a lot that is constantly suggested WILL happen. Eventually.)

Our show,YOUNG & RECKLESS, is the brainchild of writer Andrea Shawcross and her long time collaborator, Devon Ferguson. We were able to produce this pilot with the support of Telus Optik Local and CreativeBC, and it can be viewed on Telus’ VOD platform and YouTube channel.

The series stars Leo Nominated actor and co-creator Devon Ferguson (How to be an Actor) as a fast-talking law-school drop out who volunteers to babysit the daughter of his crush, the Camaro-driving, ad exec neighbor (Christina SicoliParanormal Solutions), only to discover she’s a 13-year-old nightmare (Sierra Pitkin,TrollsJuno). Doron Bell (DinoTrux), June B. Wilde (The Butterfly Effect) and Seth Isaac Johnson (The Killing) round out the stellar cast, and introduces newcomer Paige Bateman as a 12 year-old feminist sidekick.

OLIVIA (Sierra Pitkin) come head to head with authority.

OLIVIA (Sierra Pitkin) come head to head with authority.

Women further dominated behind the camera with cinematographer Lindsay George (Beat Around the Bush, A Night for Dying Tigers, Prodigals). The shoot was a reunion for Sierra Pitkin, a self-proclaimed 15 year-old vegetarian feminist, and myseld who first worked together in 2009 on Trolls.

Our YOUNG & RECKLESS team was mentored by television writer Mark Farrell (Seed, Corner Gas), producer Andrew Williamson (Motive), and branding consultant Annelise Larson, in partnership with Canada’s National Screen Institute (NSI).

YOUNG & RECKLESS features a great Canadian soundtrack from many up-and-coming Canadian bands including Rykka, Van Damsel, and Doom Squad. YOUNG & RECKLESS completed principal photography in Langley and Kelowna, BC in May, 2016 and was released October 7th, 2016

Rykka flew in from Switzerland, we shot the “Bad Boy” video in one day in Coquitlam, BC, and then she was off again.

(But mostly, I wrote her blog post about me)

styling_stories_stephanie_hallIt’s cool though because we (Stephanie Hall and I ) were put in touch through a Vancouver online Forum called “Girl Gang” and, as a Creative Writer + Online Marketing Specialist, Stephanie asked the group to participate in an interview to share what it is we do all day with the world.

Grey Gritt LIVE video for “Local Smoke”

In March I finally made a trip I’ve been wanting to take for YEARS. Go to Yellowknife, NWT, in March and see what this Snow Castle on the frozen lake is all about. (Yes, there is a full on castle that normal size people, and a lot of them, can attend for all sorts of screenings, music, and performance shows.) So I packed every single layer of clothing I own, and headed North. Way North. Now, I’d also been a fan of Grey Gritt for a few years as well, using their song “Nickels & Dimes” for The Dangers of Online Dating trailer. So we made a video. And here it is.

“Local Smoke” by Grey Gritt
March 2015, Yellowknife, NWT

Directed, shot & edited by: Brianne Nord-Stewart

And The Edge YK, a Yellowknife local paper, wrote a dandy article about the video and Grey which you can read HERE or scratch the surface here:

Local Smoke, Greyson Gritt’s song and new video, speaks volumes about the artist behind the blues licks and the finger-flipping lyrics.

“If you listen to the song, she’s this, she’s that, she’s doing this, and she’s doing that, and it’s like f*** off already, she’s burning this town down and there’s nothing you can do about it,” says Gritt.

Written as part of Carmen Braden’s Local Smoke Musical Exhibition, a nod to last year’s devastating forest fire season, Gritt says the song was a way of dealing with trash-talkers.

“It’s about inner strength, but it’s also an homage to the badass ladies in my life, because sometimes I think we’re not badass enough. We should be more true to our nature.”

It’s Been a Tick

I spent all of November in Australia. “The Dangers of Online Dating” Did not win ComedyCoup. But we’re over it. Well…mostly. A fellow Vancouver team, “Human Town” won. So congrats to them!

DOOD-comedycoup-mission7paula
Beat Around the Bush” the short film is almost locked and ready to send off to film festivals around the world. And then I will start writing the feature film version as Harold Greenberg Fund has so graciously given me some development money as well.

dearrouge-singitfwd-2014At the end of October had some talented film friends Riel Mcguire and Andy Hodgson volunteer with me to shoot a live performance video of “Best Look Lately” with Dear Rouge and St. James Music Academy’s Senior Choir to promote their fundraiser concert #singitfwd which is happening January 8th, 2015 at the Vogue Theatre. Watch the video below!

I recently uploaded an older in studio video of Cayley Thomas from her track “Hideaway”. Sorry that slipped under the radar.

And in the new year I will be making a few for commercials. For what you ask? An online dating site. Bangin’

There will also be more music videos and in studio videos as well, because I just love that music.
